Who watches the watchmen……………..

First of all apologies to both Allen Moore and Dave Gibbons for rather unimaginatively ripping of a quip from there cult classic graphic novel “ Watchmen”. Then again that’s the only thing as me and a billion ordinary Indians feel when affronted with the spectacle of a state sanctioned vigilante is unmasked in a comically graphic way.
The government is running out of one liners and laterally moving heaven and earth to safely pass on the buck. Seems Manmohan Singh has just found out that in our republic the high prosecutor is a criminal suspect we can as well forget the Cesar’s wife. First he was unaware of the pending prosecution case, next he was aware but he thought that since there is vigilance clearance it was ok etc.The court had aptly asked what we all ask is a candidate for the task of prime watchdog for this country requiring an eligibility criterion “outstanding officer with impeccable intrigrity” chosen on the basis of downloaded CV.In fact even the CVC had passed a vigilance clearance based on a two page note from the Department of Personal and Training not mentioning his criminal antecedents as per the RTI filed by Mr. P Bhusan.
Perhaps by the way of things B.Ramalinga Raju and Harshad Mehta could have been prime anti corruption body heads if they had properly forwarded there CV’s.
Then there’s the man himself who it seems can’t be booted out given the safeguards his job guarantees .He won’t quit or accept another post because being the highly honest beurocrat he is that will be akin to a confession. Hence now we have a charge sheeted accused in charge of preventing others from doing something he is accused of.
Adding to this sense of the bizarre is the excerpts from his own affidavit justifying his appointment. His defense is that honest civil servants while honestly servicing the country inadvertently find themselves in the wrong side of the law because of others.
He might come in handy for his ever prosecuted honest brethren .Advancing there carrier of running or ruining the country by removing the impediment of being “charge sheeted for corruption”.
Frankly the people in charge of watching out for our country need to be watched over themselves.
